Stairs are one of the most important places in the home to install a safety gate. Our bespoke wooden stair gates are designed to provide a strong and reliable barrier, helping prevent accidents while maintaining a natural, attractive look within your home.

Every gate is made to order, built to the exact width of your staircase opening. Whether your stairs are positioned at the top, bottom, or in an unusual layout, we craft each gate to ensure it fits securely and operates smoothly.

Each gate is handcrafted in Castleford by a fully qualified joiner with over 30 years of experience, combining traditional woodworking skills with practical safety design.

Designed Specifically for Staircases

Unlike many off-the-shelf stair gates, our gates are designed with real homes and real staircases in mind. Stair openings are often slightly uneven or positioned between bannisters and walls, which can make standard gates difficult to install properly.

Because our gates are made to measure, they provide a clean, secure fit without bulky extensions or awkward gaps. If the opening is slightly uneven, we can taper the side batons so the gate sits neatly and safely within the space.

The result is a gate that not only protects your child but also looks like it truly belongs in your home.

Tapered Side Batons: If your opening isn’t perfectly square, we can taper the side batons so the gate fits neatly and securely. This service is available for an additional £18.

All gates are built accurate to within 2mm.

Wood Options

Our stair gates are available in a selection of high-quality woods including Traditional Knotty Pine, Walnut, Ash, Beech, and Oak. Other hardwoods may also be available on request.

Pine is our standard option and remains the most popular choice. It is a beautiful, strong, hard-wearing wood that suits both modern and traditional homes. As a natural material, pine gradually deepens in colour over time, developing into a warm honey tone that enhances its character.

Fixings & Ironmongery

Each gate comes supplied with galvanised hinges already attached, along with a galvanised sliding bolt for secure closing.

For those who prefer a different finish, brass hinges and bolts are available as an optional upgrade for £12. We charge only what we pay for these fittings and do not add any markup.

What can I use it for?

You can use our gates as a baby gate for stairs or garden doors, a toddler barrier, a pet gate, or even a decorative wooden divider. We personally use ours at the back door and at both the top and bottom of the stairs for our 18‑month‑old. Every gate comes with fittings, fixtures, and a bolt or lock included.

Can you adjust the spindle spacing?

Yes. Standard spacing is 2 inches between spindles, but we can adjust this at no extra charge. For example, some customers prefer spacing small enough to stop a baby but wide enough for a cat to pass through.

I’m not confident measuring—what should I do?

Simply measure the width of the opening where the gate will sit and send us that measurement. We’ll make it to that exact size. If you’re unsure, just ask—we’re happy to guide you through it.

Can you make something unusual?

Absolutely. We love a challenge. If it’s made of wood, we’re 99% sure we can make it, no matter how unusual the request.
